Project 5: Dyed Rice

December 12, 2011

Inspiration: (click through to pin, and keep clicking for full instructions!)

This was one of those pins that I saw and thought, “That probably won’t work.” Call me a doubter, but I had a feeling that it would be really hard to get the rice to dry quickly, or the colour to disperse.

I was wrong! It worked so nicely. I think the colours I chose were a little bland and might use liquid food colouring instead (I used gel paste and mixed it in water first, which left a few clumps) and also get whiter rice (I had greyish-brown “whatever the cheapest huge bag brand was”) but the alcohol made the moisture evaporate right away, and the rice was dry within 20 minutes.

This is a great craft for parents or teachers- rice sensory tables are a lot of fun and this adds a burst of colour and excitement. I used the rice I coloured in a shake and find bottle! Coming up next. Darcy is my Vanna White, with our next crafting puzzle!
